A+ Coordinator/Administrative Assistant
The A+ Schools program
is a school-improvement initiative established by the Outstanding Schools Act
of 1993. The program is raising academic standards, opening new doors to higher
education and introducing students to the teaching profession through tutoring
and mentoring activities.
The program is designed
to provide incentives for local high schools to:
• Reduce the dropout rate
• Raise academic expectations and eliminate "general track"
courses
• Provide better "career pathways" for all students
• Work more closely with business and higher-education leaders.
GOALS:
The
primary goal of A+ Schools is to assure that all students are well-prepared to
pursue advanced education and employment.

STUDENT ELIGIBILITY
REQUIREMENTS
Students who graduate
from a designated A+ School may qualify for state-paid assistance to attend any
public community college or technical school in the state. More than
33,000 students have qualified for the tuition assistance since 1997.
Currently there are more than 28,000 students eligible for the incentive.
Since 1997, the number of students who have used at least one semester of A+
funding is more than 14,000.
Students must meet the
following requirements to be eligible for the tuition reimbursement:
· Attend a designated A+
School for three consecutive years prior to graduation
· Have a grade point
average of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale
· Have at least a 95
percent attendance record
· Perform 50 hours of
unpaid tutoring or mentoring
· Maintain a record of
good citizenship and avoidance of the unlawful use of drugs and alcohol
· Attend a

may be available only after the student has made a documented good faith effort
to first secure al available federal postsecondary student financial assistance
funds that do not require repayment.
